A Victorian Christmas, 200 Years in the Making
This Christmas, we’re turning the clock back at Groves Yard — and for a very special reason.
2026 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Alfred Groves, the man whose name is still above the door here in Milton-under-Wychwood.
Born in 1826, Alfred Groves furthered the business that would become part of the fabric of the Wychwoods. Builder, craftsman and entrepreneur, his legacy can still be seen today in the historic buildings of Groves Yard and throughout the local area.
So, when we started planning this year’s Christmas Market, a Victorian theme seemed particularly fitting.
We’ll be celebrating Alfred’s bicentenary by taking Groves Yard back to his era for one festive evening. Expect carol singers, a brass band, traditional Christmas touches, twinkling lights and plenty of atmosphere, alongside local artists, makers, crafters, food producers and gift sellers.
It’s a chance to celebrate where we’ve come from while supporting the independent businesses and craftspeople who are part of Groves Yard today.
And who knows, he may even join us on the day!
