Salvage & Selvedge at Grove’s Yard: Working with Recycled Materials

One of the things I enjoy most about creating at Salvage and Selvedge is working with recycled and reclaimed materials. There is something special about taking a piece of fabric that may have been overlooked, discarded or forgotten and giving it a new purpose.

Every textile has a story. A remnant from a sewing project, a vintage linen, or a piece of fabric rescued from being thrown away can all be transformed into something beautiful and meaningful. I love the challenge of looking beyond what an item is and imagining what it could become.

Using recycled materials is also an important way to reduce waste. The fashion and textile industries generate enormous amounts of waste each year, much of which ends up in landfill. By reusing existing materials, we can help extend their life and reduce the demand for new resources. It may seem like a small step, but many small steps taken together can have a significant impact.

The good news is that anyone can incorporate recycled materials into their daily lives. Old clothes can be repurposed into bags, cushions or patchwork projects. Fabric scraps can be used for crafting, mending or creative artwork. Even choosing second-hand items or supporting makers who use reclaimed materials helps keep valuable resources in circulation.

At Salvage and Selvedge, I believe sustainability and creativity go hand in hand. Working with recycled materials not only helps reduce waste, but also results in pieces with character, history and individuality. No two creations are exactly alike, and that uniqueness is part of their charm.

My hope is that every piece I create encourages people to see the beauty and potential in materials that already exist. Sometimes the most inspiring treasures are not brand new—they are simply waiting for a second chance.
